Task
As part of the development of thermal simulations for cables and connectors in electromobility, the focus of the project for Hirschmann Automotive GmbH was on creating an intuitive and powerful user interface.
The aim was to integrate complex engineering calculations performed with Matlab and Simulink models into a clearly structured Matlab app and a Windows standalone application. This was intended to enable users to operate the system efficiently and easily.
The project enabled a smooth internal handover and the uncomplicated training of employees without simulation experience. As a result, the application could be quickly introduced throughout the company and used productively.
The software is based on equivalent thermal equivalent circuits, which can be used to simulate the behaviour of cables and contact systems under various conditions.
Solution approach
- Requirements analysis: In close consultation with the customer from the automotive industry, the functional requirements of the GUI were defined, in particular the selection and parameterisation of the thermal equivalent circuits.
- GUI design: Design of a clearly structured layout with intuitive menu navigation and uniform visualisation of input and output data.
- Implementation: Development of the graphical user interface as a Matlab app and Windows standalone application that controls existing Matlab and Simulink models in the background.
- Validation and handover: Multiple feedback loops ensured that the application met the technical requirements and was user-friendly.
Result
The result was a customised thermal simulation application that significantly simplifies the daily work of engineers. The application offers:
- Clear presentation of simulation results (diagrams and tables)
Option for automatic report generation
Flexible selection and adjustment of material parameters
Smooth integration of Matlab and Simulink models into a Matlab app and standalone application
Industry-specific optimisation for the automotive industry
Close cooperation with the customer enabled complex technical content to be successfully transferred into a powerful, easy-to-use application.
